Complete Eye Examination:
A comprehensive examination consists of numerous tests and can vary depending on your age. We begin our exam by determining your unique visual needs and concerns. This includes a complete medical, ocular and family history. We then measure your level of vision using your existing glasses or contact lenses. An external exam and an evaluation of the movements of the eye are performed. In addition, we review the response of the pupils to light as well as health of the eyelids and surrounding tissues.
Our complete internal exam screens for various eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Many systemic health problems such as diabetes have ocular side effects that can permanently impair vision. A refraction is performed to determine your spectacle or contact lens prescription. Since many patients have varied visual demands, our doctors can recommend special lenses to help with your unique visual needs.
Our doctors recommend the following general guideline for eye exams:
- By Age 3: First complete eye examination.
- Age 5-20: every 1-2 years as recommended by your eye doctor.
- Age 21-65: every 2 years or as recommended.
- Age 65 and over: annual examination.
Many people are interested in laser vision correction as a means to reduce their need for glasses and contact lenses. LASIK is one of the more popular procedures and is more affordable than ever. LASIK is a type of refractive surgery that uses a laser to vaporize tiny pieces of unwanted tissue from the cornea - the front part of the eye. It can improve vision only if the cause of poor vision is incorrect light refraction, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. During LASIK, a thin flap is cut in the corneal surface, to expose the layer beneath. It is folded back out of the way, while a laser reshapes the corneal curvature. Afterwards, the flap is folded back, and smoothed down gently. It will heal without any sutures.
Our doctors have extensive experience evaluating and counseling refractive surgery patients. Dr. Kegarise directed the busiest eye disease and surgical referral practice in Nashville for over 12 years before taking over Cool Springs EyeCare.
